Teacher and student numbers across the Island

Education Minister Dame Jennifer Smith has released a series of teacher and student numbers for the Island’s public schools.Dame Jennifer gave the number of teachers employed during the 2011-12 school year as: 53 for preschools; 303 for primary schools; 160 for middle schools; 147 for senior schools, and 16 for special programmes.Paraprofessionals employed for the current year are: eight for preschools; 66 for primary schools; 27 for middle schools; six for senior schools, and nine for special schools.Learning support teachers: two for preschools, 27 for primary schools, 19 for middle schools; 17 for senior schools, and three for special schools.For school counsellors, 15 were employed at primary schools, which share with preschools; ten were employed at middle schools, 12 at senior schools and one at special programmes.The total student enrolment in September, 2011 was given as: 428 at preschools; 2,642 at primary schools; 1,068 at middle schools; 1,314 at senior schools, 22 at special schools and 11 in alternative education programmes.The figures were given in response to Parliamentary Questions from Shadow Minister Grant Gibbons.
