Bodden back to give Bermuda a good laugh

An American, a Canadian, a Brit and a Bermudian walk into a bar ... If you want to know the punchline then you’ll have to attend the sixth annual Just for Laughs show. This year’s comedy event, which begins next Wednesday, features several critically acclaimed comedians including Canadian Derek Edwards, American Ryan Hamilton, Alun Cocharane of Britain, and Bermudian Jonathan Young. NBC Last Comic Standing winner Alonzo Bodden will also return as host.“The main thing that will be different this year from last, is that we will have Alonzo Bodden,” said Just for Laughs organiser Richard Simon. “He has hosted the event a number of times, but last year he had to drop out at the last minute due to a scheduling conflict. He is coming back this year, and doing a solo evening at City Hall on January 11.”Mr Simon said Mr Bodden’s solo show promises to be amazing, and at $45 is a “hell of a deal”.“His material will be different in the solo show compared to his material in the larger show,” said Mr Simon. “The solo show will be a great introduction for people who have never been to a Just for Laughs Show. It’s in town so they can park without hassle.”There will be a special Cabaret night on Thursday at the Fairmont Southampton Hotel in the Mid-Ocean Amphitheatre. This will include an elegant setting with round tables, table service and finger foods available. The Friday and Saturday will be a more traditional setting with some reserved seating available for those willing to pay a little more.“Derek Edwards was here four years ago,” said Mr Simon. “He appeared in a summer show. He was recently hailed as a virtuoso at the peak of performance and has an affable knack in turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. He has been featured on many television and radio shows, is a two-time Gemini Award nominee and has garnered the title of Canadian Comic of the Year. He has filled theatres across Canada and most recently completed a 60-city tour of his solo show, ‘My Blunderful Life’.”Another comic in the line-up, Ryan Hamilton, was named one of Rolling Stone magazine’s top five comics to watch. He appeared on NBC’s Last Comic Standing in 2010, and last year, he was a stand-out performer on the cross-Canada Just For Laughs Comedy Tour. He has also been featured on Comedy Central’s ‘Live at Gotham’ and Caroline Rhea’s Showtime special, ‘Caroline Rhea & Friends’.“With his effortless charm and clever, clean style, Ryan creates an honest yet quirky snapshot of his life that delights audiences everywhere,” said Mr Simon.Alun Cochrane is a Perrier Award nominated comedian who has appeared in many television shows in the United Kingdom, including the BBC’s ‘Michael McIntyre’s Roadshow’ and ‘Never Mind The Buzzcocks’. He is a regular at the Edinburgh comedy festival, where he received the Writers Guild Award for Comedy along with rave reviews for his latest show ‘Moments of Alun’.“This Brit is not only a sharp-witted, self-deprecating and hugely likeable storyteller, but also self-proclaimed no-nonsense comedian who specialises in funny nonsense,” said Mr Simon.Mr Simon said this year, with the economy so poor in Bermuda, he was worried that tickets wouldn’t sell well, but that hasn’t been the case.“Everyone has supported us really nicely,” he said. “The tickets aren’t all sold out. We won’t really know the ultimate outcome until the last week, as Bermudians tend to wait until the last week to buy tickets. I own Bermuda Tix and I know that it is the same with most events on the Island.”Alonzo Bodden’s solo show, ‘Best of Alonzo Bodden’ will be on January 11 at 8pm at City Hall Theatre with reserved seating. Tickets are $45. The cabaret show will be on January 12 at 8pm at Fairmont Southampton’s Mid-Ocean Amphitheatre. Tickets are $85. Drink service is available at your table, optional finger-food menu. Gala shows will be held on January 13 at 8.30pm and January 14 at 7pm and 10pm at the Fairmont Southampton’s Mid-Ocean Amphitheatre. Tickets are $75 for general admission, and $85 for reserved seating.Tickets are available online at www.bdatix.bm, in person at All Wrapped Up (Washington Mall) and Fabulous Fashions (Heron Bay Plaza).
