Cann eyeing player/coach role
Lionel Cann has been linked with a potential player/coaching role at three prominent clubs, The Royal Gazette can disclose. The veteran batsman quit playing for Premier 50-Over champions St David’s prior to the end of last season under controversial circumstances.Cann withdrew his services for the remainder of the campaign in protest of some of his Islanders team-mates who allegedly smoked marijuana in the dressing room at Lords and were subsequently suspended by their club. The St George’s Cup Match star has since been approached by Devonshire Recreation Club, PHC and Warwick who are keen to have him bolster their ranks in the dual capacity of player/coach.It is also understood that St George’s have shown an interest in having Cann fill the void created by the departure of former coach Clay Smith but have yet to hold formal talks with the big-hitting cricketer.“There are a few clubs that have approached me and obviously they are aware that I am leaving St David’s and looking to coach, which is my next step,” Cann said. “It’s still early days yet, but I do have my eyes on a particular club that I would love to coach.”Cann would not reveal the identity of the club he will most likely join. However, reliable cricket sources claim that he is leaning towards Warwick Workman’s Club who have tweaked the veteran player’s interest.“I am going into coaching and for me to start off I want to be at a club that has a strong discipline code and youngsters that are prepared to listen,” he added. “I’m not going into coaching for the glory but rather going in to the give some of the knowledge that I have picked up during my career.“Coaching has never been my passion, but by stepping forward I hope to grow into that position. I basically want to pass on my knowledge to the youngsters, which is something every cricketer should look to do.”Whichever club Cann decides to join his expertise on the game is sure to be an asset.Last season he topped Bermuda’s batting at the ICC World Cricket League Division Two Tournament in Dubai and led the overall run aggregates at July’s Americas Division One Twenty20 Tournament in Florida.Cann then capped a memorable season by stroking an unbeaten 49 to anchor St George’s to a two-wicket win over Cup Match rivals Somerset at Wellington Oval in the annual mid-summer classic.
