Jonte cracks hat-trick in Crawley’s cup victory
Jonte Smith reached another personal milestone in the English game earlier this week. The Bermudian footballer netted a superb hat-trick in Crawley Town Under-18s’ thumping 5-1 win against Wycombe Wanderers in the English FA Youth Cup in front of a crowd of 200 at Broadfield Stadium. The 17-year-old striker opened his account in the 13th minute when he nodded home Dan Millard’s corner kick at the near post.“We took a short corner to the near post and I jumped and headed it in,” Smith told The Royal Gazette. The former North Village youth player then grabbed a second goal in spectacular fashion just before the half to put the Red Devils up 4-0. Smith chipped the ‘keeper from the edge of the box after riding a couple of tackles en route to goal. It was deemed the best goal of the night.“I got the ball around the half-way line and dribbled it in and then chipped the keeper,” Smith said. The son of Bermuda Cricket Board presidential candidate Clay Smith then completed his treble from the penalty spot to put the finishing touches to Crawley’s emphatic win that sent them storming through to the second round of the competition.Smith was satisfied with his performance in a 4-2-3 formation and delighted to have scored a maiden hat-trick for the Red Devils.“It was a good night and everyone was excited and happy for me,” he said. The promising footballer has now scored five goals in his last three games and 11 overall so far this season.Smith signed a one-year development deal at Crawley Town last August and since then he has gone from strength to strength. He made his first appearance for Crawley Town’s reserves against Cheltenham last month and officially opened his scoring account at that level during last week’s 5-2 loss to Crawley Down.Smith, whose ultimate sporting ambition is to play professionally in the UK, said he was pleased with the progress he’s made acclimatising to the cut and thrust of the English game.“I’m getting stronger and my game speed is getting quicker as well,” he said. “I’m doing just fine.”Prior to signing with the Red Devils the teenager had a spell in the Ryman Youth League playing for Sutton United. He also had the opportunity to train with Stoke City, Nottingham Forest and Burton Albion’s youth sides.
