Skateboarders and BMXers to take over harbourfront parking lot on Sunday
Front Street will be turned into a skateboarding spectacle this weekend and all are invited. The area across from the HSBC Harbourview building will be filled with half- and quarter-pipe ramps and rails for skateboard and stunt bike enthusiasts from 11am to 5pm on Sunday.Darren Booth, chairman of Bermuda Urban Park Association, said: “The kids need somewhere to skate; that is the idea.He is working with the Corporation of Hamilton to establish the Island’s first concrete skate park, but said this weekend’s event was to entertain people in the meantime. According to Mr Booth, skateboarding has experienced a massive resurgence on the Island and throughout the world.“The young ones skating now want to be professional skateboarders. They see how much money is out there to be made and the lifestyle they have.“We want to get them good enough to send them away to competitions, but in order to get better you have to have a physical place to practise.”He said the park design has been approved by the Planning Department; they are now trying to get corporate sponsorship to build and maintain the skate park. Skate-boarders and BMX cyclists are encouraged to come out with their own equipment and helmets for safety.Anyone with a general interest can also participate or watch.
