Bike robbers’ sentencing delayed

Two men accused of hitting a woman and riding off with her motorbike have had their sentencing delayed.Christopher Parris, 27, of Devonshire and Julian Washington, 22, of Pembroke, had earlier admitted stealing Sharifa Crockwell’s bike.Their expected sentencing yesterday was delayed after Washington repeatedly denied striking the 18-year-old.The court had been told that Ms Crockwell was driving along The Glebe Road in Pembroke at around 10.30pm on May 22 when she stopped to answer her phone. Two men on a motorcycle pulled alongside her and told her to get off her bike.Ms Crockwell said the pair pulled her off her vehicle and Washington attempted to ride away, but she was able to swing her helmet at him, striking his helmet. She said Parris grabbed her shirt and punched her in the face. Washington then dismounted her bike and punched her in the body. The two men then rode away with Washington on the defendant’s bike.Ms Crockwell was treated for bruising to her face and abdominal wall. She later identified both defendants during an identification parade. The men pleaded guilty to robbery in August at which time Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo ordered pre-sentence reports on them both.Crown counsel Kirsty-Ann Kiellor noted a “serious difference in the facts” between Washington’s version of events and the Crown’s in court yesterday. She said Washington maintained that he did not strike Ms Crockwell at any point.Defence lawyer Larry Mussenden also said his client remains adamant that he did not punch the complainant.“His job was to sit on the bike and take the bike. He was not involved with punching the lady. He was involved in the taking, but didn’t assault the lady.”After hearing both sides on the matter, Mr Tokunbo determined that a Newton hearing was required to determine the facts before sentencing. Both men were remanded into custody until this morning, when the matter is expected to return to Magistrates’ Court for mention.
