Pathetic West fall as East run riot

Eastern Counties XI, 358 for nine, beat Western Counties XI, 52 all out, by 306 runs. The Eastern Counties handed their Western counterparts a hammering at Sea Breeze Oval on Saturday to avenge an earlier bruising defeat against the same opponents.Led by attractive half-centuries from Terryn Fray, Tre Manders and Aaron Adams, the East Enders piled up a colossal 358 for nine in their allotted 50 overs to place themselves in a commanding position.Dennis Mussen, Jr then claimed four wickets for a stingy six runs, while fellow seamers Damali Bell (three for 17) and Lateef Trott (three for eight) shared the remaining wickets as the Western Counties XI were blown away for a pathetic 52 runs in exactly 15 overs and eventually collapsing to a 306-run defeat. The West’s decision to send their hosts in to bat backfired as the home team simply had things all their own way batting on a flat track possessing no demons.Skipper Fray and Manders laid the foundation for the Eastern Counties’ lopsided win by way of a 91-run second-wicket stand.Fray dominated the partnership and raced to his 50 off just 38 balls. He eventually fell for 58 that included six fours and a six.But his departure did little to knock the hosts off stride as Manders and vice-captain Allan Douglas, Jr (34) kept the scoreboard ticking over via a 57-run fourth-wicket partnership.Manders reached his half-century off 61 balls but eventually fell 16 runs shy of what would have been an unprecedented fourth successive century. The opening bat blasted four fours and three sixes in a top knock of 84.But again the West’s joy would be short-lived after Manders and Douglas departed as the hosts’ tail wagged with Cleveland County pair Mussen (37) and Aaron Adams (60 not out) adding a further 92 runs for the eighth wicket.Veteran Adams blasted three fours and four sixes and faced only 31 balls to reach his half-century batting at number nine.Deunte Darrell led the West’s bowling, claiming four wickets for 62 runs during an impressive ten-over spell.Having been presented with the challenge of scoring just over seven runs per over in reply, the West proved woefully unequal to the task as Trott and Bell ripped through the top order with the new ball before leaving it to Mussen to pluck out the remaining batsmen with some clinical bowling of his own.The West’s batsmen had no answer to the trio’s laser-guided bowling that had stumps cartwheeling and bails flying all over the place.Derrick Hill led the West’s resistance with a run-a-ball 15 while fellow opener Jason Anderson nudge 11 from 22 balls before the visitors completely lost the plot. The West’s woeful performance was a far cry from the 144-run defeat they handed their eastern rivals in the first encounter earlier this month and as one observer put it “hardly worth the $50 each player was paid to play”.
