Take care of our heritage

August 4, 2011Dear Sir,I read with interest the letter from a visitor in The Royal Gazette of August 4 referring to the Gunpowder Cavern in St George’s. I, too, took some visitors to St George’s a few weeks ago on a Saturday afternoon and, as we visited various ‘historical’ sites, I was ashamed to call myself a Bermudian. If this Town is a World Heritage Site — God help us all! There, no doubt, is some PLP regime department that is supposed to take care of our heritage but as usual, they have dropped the ball ... if they ever had it in hand. Gates Fort and Fort St Catherine seemed to be locked up tight with litter all over the place. The Gunpowder Cavern is disgraceful and disgusting and the Town was deader than a doornail. In the scheme of things this is small stuff but just another example of no plan, no attention to detail and no pride in our heritage. In the same edition, there were two other letters about the postal service (I use that term very, very reservedly). The complete mismanagement of the mail service and the absolutely ridiculous ‘make life difficult’ decisions relating to perfection in addressing letters, made by these power hungry civil servants are just more examples of a government which is incompetent and unable to understand basic business principles. And try closing down for a two hour lunch in the private sector and see how long you last in business! Unbelievable ...PLEASE LET THE OBA TAKE THEIR PLACE!Smiths
