Pembroke man admits prowling charge

A 26-year-old Pembroke man pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court yesterday to prowling outside a Devonshire home.Jamal Bascome said he was heavily intoxicated at the time and was only trying to stay the night at a friend’s house.Crown counsel Kirsty-Ann Kiellor said police discovered the Sunset Pass resident on the ground near the front door of Sarah Trott’s home at 3.45am on Wednesday.Ms Trott told officers that Bascome arrived at the house in the middle of the night while she was sleeping. She said he banged continuously on the door, insisting he be let in. She repeatedly told him to go away before calling police.Bascome told the court he was out drinking in Hamilton and caught a ride from a friend heading towards Devonshire. He said he thought he could spend the night at a friend’s house on Happy Valley Road. He said: “I just wanted to check my boy.”Bascome said he was unaware his friend no longer lived at the residence. He said he hadn’t seen him for several months as he had only recently been released from prison. He claimed that he had spent the night at the house on numerous occasions previously.“I was just trying to rest my head, but I see it’s more serious than that,” Bascome said.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner indicated that the defendant’s problems were a direct result of his alcohol abuse. “It seems like madness to me that you haven’t seen your ace boy for six months and all of a sudden, in the middle of the night when you have the option of going home, you decide you are going to stay at his house,” he said.Mr Warner ordered both a drug assessment and a social inquiry report. He put Bascome on a curfew between 9pm and 6am. The matter will return to court on September 22.
