Alert at airport as plane diverts

A JetBlue flight en-route to Boston from the Dominican Republic was diverted to LF Wade International Airport yesterday after the plane’s smoke indicator was activated.Airport officials initially believed there to be smoke in the cockpit of flight 895 but were later advised the problem was actually an illuminated indicator light.“The aircraft landed at 1.44pm and as per airport emergency procedures, taxied to an isolation point on the airfield where Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service carried out a full inspection of the aircraft,” said a spokesman from the Ministry of Transport.“Once the aircraft was deemed safe, the aircraft was cleared to taxi to the terminal apron where passengers later de-planed and made their way to the airport passenger lounge.”A King Edward VII Memorial Hospital spokeswoman confirmed the facility was on lockdown for 30 minutes yesterday as a “precaution due to a potential incident involving an aircraft at the airport”.During this time the emergency room was closed to non-essential personnel but otherwise operated normally for patient care and emergency services.
