BIU calls for arbitration with Esso City Tiger Mart
The Bermuda Industrial Union (BIU) yesterday expressed concern that management at Esso City Tiger Mart is in breach of the Trade Union Act.In a statement, BIU president Chris Furbert said that the Union has over the last two months repeatedly attempted to meet with Senator Craig Cannonier, the owner of the Tiger Mart on Richmond Road, regarding a stalemate in negotiations, but without success.“For the past several months the Union has been negotiating with Sen Cannonier and presently negotiations have reached a stalemate in spite of the fact that the majority of the staff approached the Union in March 2010 requesting that we represent them at the bargaining table,” Mr Furbert wrote.”Since then, Mr Furbert said the Union has had multiple meetings, but said Sen Cannonier has not met with the Union since May 2, 2011 despite “numerous” letters and emails.“The Union has no other option but to request an arbitration as well as weighing other options to settle the matter as the staff have become disillusioned with the process due to management’s constant delay tactics.”A shop steward working at the gas station yesterday afternoon said he did not wish to comment, other than saying the situation was “no fault of Mr Cannonier’s”.He did not wish for his name to be printed.Mr Cannonier himself declined to comment on the matter.
