Borden still part of our plans, insist BCB

Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) have emphasised they have not closed the door on Delyone Borden and insist the St.David’s spinner still has a national team future.Borden has opted out of the ICC Americas Tournament in Florida next month and wrote to the BCB last week to confirm his unavailability. It was speculated in yesterday’s Royal Gazette by senior sports reporter, Josh Ball, that Borden’s international career could be over after the talented bowler missed all three of last week’s national team trials. But the BCB yesterday rebuffed those claims and said they would “welcome Borden back into the squad when his situation changes.”The statement released yesterday read: “ . . . the Bermuda Cricket Board would like to confirm that it received private correspondence from national player and St. David’s cricketer Mr. Delyone Borden on Friday afternoon.“Although the content of the letter will not be released, the Bermuda Cricket Board would like to thank Mr. Borden for the letter and clarify that at no stage has any member of the Board contemplated closing the door on Mr. Borden’s future playing career with the Bermuda national team.”Bermuda coach David Moore believes Borden, 26, still has plenty to offer the national team and said he had been an integral part of the squad in recent years.“When available to play Delyone has been an integral part of the Bermuda playing line-up and has contributed not only to the performance of the team but the spirit of the team both on and off the field,” said Moore. “It would be unthinkable to finish the career of a young and talented player such as Delyone due to personal circumstance.“Sporting teams, administrators and supporters must understand that while players are not full-time there will be always instances of unavailability due to work or personal commitments.“Delyone worked exceptionally well during our winter programme and performed admirably in Dubai. We look forward to welcoming him back into the squad when his situation changes.”BCB president Reggie Pearman added: “We are a small country that punches above its weight in the international arena and it is critical that we work together as a community to maximise our results. The statement about the BCB closing the door on Delyone is complete nonsense.”Moore is expected to name his squad for the Americas Tournament later this week.
