Butterfield rises 3.8%

Butterfield Bank shares surged nearly four percent yesterday to send the Bermuda Stock Exchange higher.The bank rose five cents, or 3.8 percent, to close the day on $1.38, as 43,031 shares changed hands.Energy group Ascendant Group Ltd, owner of electricity company Belco, also advanced, gaining 45 cents, or 3.2 percent, to close on $14.50, as 18,462 shares were traded.Insurer BF&M Ltd also saw trading activity, but held steady on $14.60 as 3,052 shares changed hands.The Royal Gazette / BSX Index rose 27.87 points, or 2.41 percent, to close the day on 1,185.45.Volume was 64,545 shares and turnover was $363,072.90.The BSX Insurance Index of the Island’s leading international re/insurance companies rose four points, or 0.39 percent, to 1,025.
