Record numbers to head to Isle of Wight

A record number of athletes have registered to take part in the 2011 International Island Games in Ryde on the Isle of Wight.About 3500 participants will compete in the biannual event that is scheduled to take place between 25 June and 1 July.The five largest squads at the Games will be the host’s (316), Guernsey (296), Jersey (282), Isle of Man (236) and Åland (221). Bermuda will be represented by 128 athletes from 17 teams in 13 different sports. Also making the trek will be representatives from each of the sports to gain some insight into the running of the event as the Island prepare to host the Games in 2013.Chairman of the 2011 organising committee, David Ball, said: ”The 2011 Organising Committee is delighted at the level of entries and support for the Games due to commence here in a few short weeks.“We have worked hard to try and provide the Islands with good facilities both in and out of the competition arenas and we look forward to hosting a great week of keen but ever friendly competition in the true spirit of the NatWest Island Games.”“24 of our 25 member Islands will attend the 2011 NatWest Island Games the largest multi-sport event in Great Britain this year.“Unfortunately Prince Edward Island’s basketball and football teams will not participate due to last minute funding difficulties.”
