Police can now concentrate on fighting crime after their pay dispute with Government was settled, National Security Minister David Burch told the Senate yesterday.Reflecting on the agreement he’d announced the previous day, Sen Burch said: “At various times the Government and the Bermuda Police Service have met on opposing sides at tribunals and even in the courts.“While we both strongly believed in the competing principles under discussion, the effort has occasionally diverted our attention from the real focus of our unified purpose: protecting Bermuda, her people and providing safe communities.“With these issues resolved no further valuable time and energy need be devoted to questions of money and wage increases.“The certainty that this agreement brings is in the best interests of Bermuda as it will permit the men and women of the Bermuda Police Service to focus squarely on the prevention and investigation of crime.”The long-running dispute was brought to an end on Tuesday, when Sen Burch announced Government would begin making pension payments on officers’ total earnings, effectively meaning a legal action due in the Privy Council will be discontinued.
