Police officer is injured during late night arrest

A police officer suffered a potentially serious head injury yesterday after a confrontation with a suspect.According to a police spokesman, officers were on mobile patrol at around 3.30am on Court Street when they encountered a person on a motorcycle at the junction with Dundonald Street. The officers attempted to stop the vehicle to speak with the rider, but the motorcyclist refused to stop, leading to a brief chase, both in vehicles and on foot and ending outside a Middletown Lane home.“At that location, the suspect apparently pushed one of the officers, causing him to fall before fleeing the scene,” the spokesman said. The injured officer was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, where doctors last night were assessing his condition.Police later arrested a 27-year-old Pembroke man in connection to the incident.Witnesses, or anyone with information about the incident, are asked to contact the Hamilton Criminal Investigation Unit at 295-0011, or the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers Bermuda hotline at 800-8477.Useful website: www.bps.bm.
