Opposed to College tuition hikes

Wrong time to charge tuitionMarch 10, 2011Dear Sir,There have been recent talks that the Government is to replace free tuition at the Bermuda College with “discounted prices”. During our current economic climate this is not the time to replace free tuition with “discounted prices”. Many working individuals and those unemployed are using Bermuda College to improve their qualifications so that they are better equipped to work in Bermuda’s economy. Students as well as their parents have also been taking advantage of free tuition at the Bermuda College, primarily to save money before continuing their post-secondary education overseas. During a recession to take this away will be beyond bad timing. An online petition has been started on www.GoPetition.com under “Keep Bermuda College Tuition Free” and the link is http://www.gopetition.com/petition/43750.html. I hope the public will take this seriously and take the time out to come up with alternatives, so that free tuition may continue in the future.CHRISTOPHER JOHN ANTHONY DOUGLASPagetKeep College freeMarch 10, 2011Dear Sir,There has been recent talk in the media that there would be a revamp of Bermuda College fees for students. I understand this is necessary considering the financial hardship that everyone is facing. When making your decision on how much students must pay, please consider the students who are currently enrolled at the College. I am considered a working adult who is working towards an Associates Degree. I cannot afford to pay a higher tuition fee along with my rent and other expenses. The lower tuition was what helped me to make my decision to return to school after many years. I have just completed my first year and I don’t want to have to drop out because I cannot afford the higher fees. My goal is to finish my Associate’s and then work towards my Bachelor’s degree. Please think about all of the students when making your decision regarding tuition fees. Education is the key to Bermuda’s future.BERMUDA COLLEGE STUDENTPembroke
