Performing arts students were impressed on eventful excursion to New York City
From the flashing lights of Broadway to the loud and exciting street shopping in Greenwich Village, Saltus did it all! Saltus Grammar School planned a Performing Arts trip to New York in February, and with an exciting line up of activities, loads of students from years 8 to 10 signed up, attracting a bunch of different characters to go to the Big Apple.
We saw shows that would still blow your mind if you saw them five times and participated in workshops that we will never forget on an altogether great trip. To start, we saw shows that included 'Wicked,' the witches' side of the Wizard of Oz story. We saw 'Stomp' which was just mind-blowing! In this production the cast used every possible object they could to make noise down to a soothing beat that even put some of us to sleep. Another play, 'Lend me a Tenor', was a comedy about an opera singer who dies and then basically, comes back to life. Most of us were amazed when we spotted the star of the TV show 'Monk'! Finally, to wrap it all up we saw the ever famous 'Blue Man Group' and one of our music teachers got covered in Banana!
Some mornings the group attended workshops, which consisted of hip-hop dancing, stage fighting (fake fighting) and make-up application. We absolutely loved the workshops, especially the hip-hop dancing which was also a little embarrassing considering half of us didn't know how to dance!
Along with all of the shows and workshops, the one thing that no one could forget was the shopping! We shopped almost everywhere, and with the boys doing their thing and the girls doing theirs, we bought a lot of stuff. We visited museums and even went skating at the Rockefeller Center where, unfortunately, one of our less coordinated members managed to break his arm.
We did tons of things and ate in very exotic places where people would come and sing to you! I think that after the trip a lot of us could call New York one of our favourite cities in the world, as from the NBC studios tour to taking a ferry around the Statue of Liberty, we had a lot of fun.
