Bermuda in limbo following thrashing

Bermuda's Junior Davis Cup team must await their fate after losing to top ranked Guatemala 3-0, to end their group schedule –1-1.

The Island defeated Grenada 2-1 on Monday.

The winners of each group, along with the next best three records of all groups will play in a knockout round to decide their positions in the top eight, with the Island's youngsters sweating to see if they have advanced to the top eight bracket.

Playing against a side of the calibre of Guatemala, who have showed their strength in all three games played, Bermuda were always going to be facing a real test.

Yet regardless of the final score, the combination of Jack Keyes and Neal Towlson applied themselves well during the tie.

Playing number two again for Bermuda was Keyes who started out positive, going up one point in his first service game.

An hour later, however, he was back on the sidelines having been dispatched with a final result of 6-1 6-0 by Guatemala's number two, Stefan Beliere.

Keyes was having some problems getting his serve in gear, not to mention the steady penetrating top spin of his talented opponent.

In the second singles match, Towlson, playing at number one, did not fair too much better.

His opponent matched him in height and age but that's where the similarities ended.

As much as Towlson tried to impose himself on the game he was unable to get the better of his opponent, Wilfredo Gonzalez, who eventually won 6-2, 6-2.

Bermuda, needing to salvage at least a good record in the doubles match was paired against Gonzalez and Luciano Ramazzini.

The pair missed out on a number of good opportunities to take the first set, eventually narrowly losing 7-5.

Losing the first set in these circumstances seemed to knock the wind out of their sails with the final result being 7-5, 6-0 for the Guatemalans.

"The team learned much from this encounter and hope to improve on their performances in the next round," said captain Jerome Bradshaw.

"As play is not yet complete for the day it remains to be seen whether Bermuda will make it in the top eight."

Yesterday was a rest day for Bermuda from competition.
