TASER FACTS:
Tasers are also referred to as 'stun guns' and 'less-lethal weapons'.
They are hand-held weapons which deliver a jolt of electricity through a pair of wires propelled by compressed air. The electrical current temporarily interrupts signals in the brain controlling muscle movement, inducing involuntary muscle contractions. The target becomes immobilised, falling to the ground.
Taser stands for 'Thomas A. Swift Electric Rifle'. It is named after a series of children's science-fiction novels written in the early 20th century, featuring young inventor Tom Swift.
Taser International, of Arizona, US, manufactures the weapon, which is used by military organisations and law enforcement agencies in 44 countries around the world.
The X26 to be deployed by the Bermuda Police Service, is one of the most commonly used Tasers. It delivers a charge of about 2,000 volts and uses an XP25 cartridge, capable of firing at a target 25 ft away.
