Boss finds Filipino worker, 42, dead in apartment

A Filipino national was found dead in his apartment yesterday morning, discovered by his boss after he failed to show at work.

The father-of-three, who is not being named until his family has been notified, has lived in Bermuda for the past five years.

The 42-year-old was working as a welder at MASS Ltd. in St. George's at the time of his death.

Chris Faries, co-owner of the business, said it was a "sad day" for the company.

Mr. Faries said the man lived in an apartment on the boatyard and that his two brothers and sister were living in Bermuda as well.

"It's a tragic day. He never came to work. I went down to open the apartment and I found him dead. A doctor or coroner came from Government, she pronounced him dead and basically said there was no foul play."

He added that he found the man at around 7.30 a.m.

"He was laying down peaceful, the door was locked. Basically he went to sleep and never woke up. He was fine yesterday. I said goodbye to him yesterday. He walked to his apartment. The man just literally died in his sleep.

"He didn't come to work and he always comes to work early. Initially I went out there banging on the door. I feel bad for his family and his kids. This is all tragic."

Mr. Faries said an autopsy is expected to take place sometime today to determine the cause of death. Afterwards, the welder's body will be sent back to the Philippines.

"It's a sad day. It's just the passing of a good guy," Mr. Faries added.

He said the St. George's Boatyard and MASS were both closed after the paramedics and Police left the scene.

A Police spokesperson confirmed the details of the man's death and added: "There does not appear to be any suspicious circumstances. Inquiries into this incident are underway. No further information will be released until the next of kin has been notified."
