Statistics issues air arrivals correction
Air arrivals between April and June this year were the second lowest recorded number since 1980 — not the lowest as had been previously reported by the Department of Statistics.
In a correction sent to all media last night that included an updated Quarterly Bulletin, which was originally released two Fridays ago, the Department attempted to clarify any confusion.
The issue concerns a sentence in the opening paragraph under Air Arrivals, which originally stated that: "The number of visitors stood at 89,642 persons, representing the lowest second quarter visitor total since 1980."
Instead, according to the Department of Statistics, it should read: "The number of visitors stood at 89,642 persons, representing the second lowest April to June quarter visitor total since 1980."
Prior to 1980 statistics were compiled using a different method.
The numbers from April to June this year, however, still represent the fifth consecutive quarter to see a decline in resort hotel occupancy.
And also recorded $18 million less in visitor spending during the same three month period. The Bulletin explains the drop in arrivals was partly due to "soaring oil prices" and therefore major air carriers reducing their service to the Island.
A spokesperson for the Department added: "The Department of Statistics apologises for any confusion this may have caused."
