An 875-mile telecommunications cable connecting the East Coat of the US with Bermuda came ashore yesterday morning after months of work.

Anyone looking off of South Shore, yesterday, near Hungry Bay in Devonshire would have noticed the IT Interceptor which was laying the Challenger Cable.

The ship, which had arrived on Friday, left Hamilton on Monday to begin work on the South Shore on behalf of Cable Co. Ltd. which was established by KeyTech Ltd., North Rock Communications Ltd and Transact Ltd.

The company received a Class A licence to build and operate the Challenger cable last December, which will offer Bermuda customers system redundancy and supplier diversity in international cable facilities.

IT Interceptor is expected to return to Hamilton tomorrow.

While the SISL's Somers Isles Voy. 795 arrived yesterday at 8.15 a.m. from Fernandina Beach, Florida with 155 containers including 10 reefer and a floating dock.

She will leave today at 8.05 a.m. to return to Fernandina Beach.

Arriving tomorrow afternoon will be the BISL's Bermuda Islander Voy. 1028 from Salem, New Jersey with 160 containers plus one 42-foot trailer.

She will return to Salem on Friday.

Oleander, meanwhile, arrived on Sunday carrying 148 dry containers, 44 refrigerated containers for a total of 192 containers.

Other cargo onboard was one bobcat, an excavator, ten road trailers and 15 cars.

Oleander left Bermuda at 8.05 a.m. yesterday.
