Bermuda fans to still get Setanta

Sports viewers will not see their coverage of the top English football matches affected after Bermuda CableVision announced it will continue to show Barclays Premier League action on Setanta Sports.

This is despite Setanta Sports going into administration after failing to make a number of payments to sporting organisations and ceasing to broadcast in the UK with immediate effect, while the rights to screen –46 games in next season's English Premier League and –23 games per season between 2010 and 2013 were awarded to ESPN.

But Setanta Sports subscribers in Bermuda will not be impacted by the move due to CableVision's programming provider being separate from the Irish broadcaster's UK operation.

Terry Roberson, general manager of Bermuda CableVision, said he had been advised yesterday by International Media Content Ltd., the owner of distribution rights for Setanta Sports in the Caribbean of the UK entity's placement into administration.

"I would like to reassure our customers that Setanta Sports programming will be unaffected by this news and it will continue to be broadcast as usual in Bermuda, as our programming provider is separate from the UK," he said.

"This includes the broadcasting of the Barclays Premier League, which will air as normal in the Caribbean region, despite the rights to show two exclusive live media packages for the 2009/10, and one package from August 2010 for the following three seasons being awarded to ESPN in the United Kingdom only.

"Bermuda CableVision is monitoring this situation very closely and will keep our customers updated regarding their Setanta service should this situation change."

Setanta went off air in the UK last night, with the loss of 200 jobs. However Setanta International, which broadcasts in Bermuda, was unaffected.
