There are dozens of different types of rose, here Lifestyle looks at a handful:

Bermuda mystery rose: known to be hardy and resistant to certain rose diseases. They grow in Bermuda and are not yet properly identified.

Noisettes: The Noisette is a cross between the China rose's Parson's Pink and the Rosa moschafa. It blooms huge clusters of roses from spring to fall.

Old Garden Roses: Those cultivated before 1867 as opposed to modern garden roses cultivated after this time.

Tea roses: These roses are the result of crossing China roses with various Noisette and Bourbon roses. Their colour range includes yellow, white and pink. Their petals tend to roll back at the edges and therefore the petal at the middle has a pointed tip. According to Mr. Scanniello, they are referred to as tea roses because in days gone by they were quite a status symbol. After buying a tea rose bush a lady would invite all of her friends over for tea in her conservatory so they could admire it.

China: These are smaller and less fragrant than other roses. They were first cultivated in East Asia.

Damask: Have nasty thorns and bloom once in the summer months.

Bourbon: These roses are said to have originated off the coast of Madagascar. These roses have semi climbing shrubs and a purple tinted cane. They are probably the result of a cross between the Autumn Damask and the Old Bush China rose Tea.
