Police gear up for Christmas activities

Police officers will be out in full force over the Christmas holiday and are encouraging the public not to drink and drive.

Insp. Mark Botelho explained the traffic unit and regular patrol officers will be working "extended hours".

"We encourage people not to drink and drive – to get a designated driver, use public transportation or get a cab. We will be targeting impaired drivers and dangerous drivers. Please stick to the speed limit and enjoy yourself over the festive season," he said.

PC Carlnika Roser added the public should remember to lock their windows and doors once leaving the house so that burglars won't be able to steal from them.

She also said people should look out for strangers coming to their doors in the form of handymen or painters.

PC Roser encouraged the public to also lock their car doors while driving at night and go to ATMs during the day to avoid being robbed.

She also said while shopping, remember to put shopping bags in the trunk of the car so they won't be stolen.

And those wishing to drink over the holidays must be over the age of 18 – Police will be monitoring venues where alcohol is served and a $500 fine can be imposed for using false ID.

Asked if Christmas is the busiest season for drink-driving and break-ins, Insp. Botelho said it was a toss-up between Christmas and Cup Match.
