Postman gets road ban after speeding at 95 kph
A Warwick postman has been taken off the road for giving a false name – that of his younger brother – when pulled over by Police.
Hopde Burrows, 29, entered a guilty plea in Magistrates' Court for perverting the course of justice.
He told Senior Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo he had only given his brother's name and birthdate to Police to avoid losing his licence, which he said he needed for his job with the Bermuda Postal Service.
He was pulled over at 12.20 a.m. on June 16 on Court Street, and when asked for his driver's licence, said: "I don't have it on me."
He then gave his name as 'Zekristos Lee' his brother, who in fact had outstanding warrants in his name.
When Mr. Tokunbo asked Burrows why he had decided to get his brother in trouble, the defendant told the court: "My brother can't get in any more trouble than he's in right now."
He also entered a guilty plea to the charge of driving 95 kph.
"The '95' is the reason I used my brother's name," he said. "I can't afford to lose my licence I'm a mailman."
Mr. Tokunbo answered: "Well, you just lost it."
Burrows is now off the road for six months.
Crown counsel Larissa Burgess noted that he already had 12 demerit points for previous charges of speeding and driving without due care and attention.
