City Hall staff seek better communication with bosses
Staff at the Corporation of Hamilton want better communication with management, according to a recent poll.
Speaking to Corporation officials at their monthly meeting last week, statistician Cordell Riley said the results of a recent staff survey by Profiles of Bermuda, commissioned by the Corporation, were positive.
However, the results showed room for improvement, specifically in the area of communication.
"Communication issues are a constant theme, with a number of staff feeling they know little about what is going on," Mr. Riley said.
Around half of the Corporation staff took part in the survey in April, and most spoke positively of their employer.
More than 80 percent of those surveyed said the benefits offered by the Corporation were as good as other employers and said that they were proud of their work.
However, more than 40 percent said they felt information was not being shared, and almost a third said they often felt they didn't know what was going on.
Another area of concern among staff is the worry that staff are not being treated fairly. Asked what could be improved, 38 percent said fairness. Comparatively, only nine percent said they should receive higher pay or greater bonuses.
"This could very likely also be boiled down to an issue of communication," said Mr. Riley. "It is possible people are not aware of the procedures that are in place.
"Letting them know what they are would help that situation."
Corporation officials said that since April, they started holding more frequent meetings with workers, but would continue to look for ways to improve communications.
While this survey was the first of its kind for Corporation staff, officials suggested that polls would now likely be carried out regularly.
