Intoxicated rider fell from bike at traffic lights

A 31-year-old was fined $1,000 in Magistrates' Court after he refused to give a breath analysis to Police.

The court heard how officers on duty at 11.45 p.m. on Richmond Road saw Jordan Kamau riding his cycle in an eastbound direction on August 14.

He stopped at a red light, had difficulty maintaining balance and subsequently fell with the bike to the ground.

Officers came to help him and noticed a strong smell of intoxicants coming from his breath. He initially agreed to take a breathalyser test, the first response being 221 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, but then failed to give a second sample.

He said yesterday: "I deeply regret my actions. I'm sorry."

He was also given a 12-month driving ban, and handed ten demerit points.
