More cash at stake as Pro Tour tees off

Bermuda's professional golfers will have a little bit more than pride to play for when The Jack Daniels Professional Golf Tour begins this afternoon at Mid Ocean.

After the success of last year's inagural Bermuda Golf Tour, directors Paul Adams and Andrew Bissell decided to expand the competition, which aims to provide constant tournament conditions for the Island's professionals.

And a sponsorship deal with Jack Daniels, with help also coming from Gosling's and Flanagans, means that $40,000 will be up for grabs over the course of the tour which will run from February to November.

"Last year we were averaging 12 guys every single week, so hopefully we'll get a few more and get a competitive, organised golf tournament on a regular basis," said Adams.

With the likes of Dwayne Pearman, Scott Roy, and Daniel Augustus looking to use the tour as a springboard to overseas tours, the hope is that the level of competition will continue to steadily improve.

"Over the course of the year the prize money adds up, and while you're not going to make a living out of it, for someone like Daniel Augustus, if he can get his finger out and actually play and practice it will be a very good springboard for someone like that," added Adams.

"And then I think the potential with Daniel we might be able to get some bigger and better sponsors maybe, he could be our Tiger Woods."

And Adams is also planning on getting the Island's amateurs involved with a series of special Pro-Ams thoughout the year, including a pro-scratch event at Fairmont Southampton.

"The plan for later on the season is to bring the amateurs in," said Adams, "maybe with a pro-scratch event at Fairmont Southampton, and a few Pro-Ams, maybe at Tucker's Point."
