Two-thirds of middle schoolers proficient in English – Ministry

Students in the Island's public middle school are performing well at English, but having difficulty passing math.

According to figures released yesterday by Minister of Education Dame Jennifer Smith, almost 100 percent of students in public middle schools are proficient in English, scoring 60 percent or higher in the Bermuda Criterion-Referenced Test (BCRT).

However, only 41.73 percent of middle schoolers showed a proficiency in Math. The BCRT is designed to measure a student's knowledge of the Bermuda Public School Curriculum.

Despite the mixed results of middle school students, children enrolled in public primary schools were ranked similarly to their peers in the US educational system according to results of the Terra Nova tests.

Around two thirds of primary school students demonstrated proficiency in English, while three quarters showed proficiency in math.

Dame Jennifer said: "The Terra Nova test scores highlight a concern with the transition from P6 to M1. These results give a picture of areas where our students are doing well and areas that need to be targeted for improvement."
