Impaired driver pleaded 'I'm almost home, come on'
A man was caught drink-driving just minutes from his home.
Donald Lindsay was arrested as he drove his Mazda car along Somerset Road in Sandys. He told Police: "I'm just going up the road. I'm almost home, come on."
Lindsay, 41, of Sandys, pleaded guilty to impaired driving at Magistrates' Court yesterday. The court heard he was twice over the limit, a breath test showing 185 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, the legal limit being 80.
Crown Counsel Brett Webber said Lindsay was arrested at 1 a.m. on December 21 as he travelled west along Somerset Road. Officers approached him after reports of his car "partially occupying the eastbound lane near Somerset Bridge".
"Police asked the driver whether he had been drinking and he replied, 'I had a few drinks'," said Mr. Webber.
"He was unsteady on his feet and was leaning on the car to stand still."
When Lindsay was arrested and cautioned, he said: "I'm just going up the road. I'm almost home, come on."
He told the court yesterday: "I'm sorry."
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner banned him from driving for a year, fined him $1,000 and imposed ten penalty points on his licence.
