Why we all owe so much to the late, great 'Soup' Zuill

This week let us take time out to give respect to a great man, a man who gave his last to comfort others, a man who has touched many and has overcome great challenges, a man who has shown dedication and worked hard in sports and life and asked for nothing in return, an honest man, a real man and a family man.

This week I give this time to Mr. Warrington George Somers (Soup) Zuill.

He was someone who had put his all into helping others by giving them the required knowledge to move forward, no matter what the circumstances, or how intense the battle.

He would make every effort to get the job done.

If you never got the chance to meet or know Mr. Zuill, then just get a chance to meet his family. They are a true reflection of who and what he stood for.

I have had the pleasure of working with his daughter, Alicia Zuill. Many may know her as Aunt Lici and just like her father, she cares for many and would drop everything in the world to help others move forward.

I have known Aunt Lici for a while but really got my lesson this summer after chatting on the phone with her father (Mr. Zuill) during the Island Soccer League (ISL) season.

He told me that I needed to do everything I could to help the young people and continue to strive, to educate them and let nothing stand in my way. He gave me a great lesson in belief.

You know what was interesting about the whole conversation? When I had talked with him I was so concerned about him and wanting to know how he was doing, little did I think that he would be schooling me in this same conversation. Little did I think that he would be worrying about anything else but his health, never dreamt that he would be making sure I got the same message he has been giving others for years.

So, after the phone conversation I took time out and realised that no matter what we strive for in life we must always give everything we have got and leave a good first and last impression behind because we never know when we will have the chance to chat with that person again.

I want us all to take time and look back on that special someone and remember what they have left behind for us to carry on, or even look back on people who we have lost connection with and have decided we would never speak with again.

If it's a friend, parent or just a colleague at work – sometimes we must swallow our pride and mend what has been broken.

I have learned plenty from Mr. Zuill's life, that it makes no sense to walk around with our heads down angry at the world, or walking around trying our hardest not to heal past relations that have gone the wrong way.

I learned that helping others sometimes brings pleasure to life, because positive actions can cause a positive reaction.

Personally, I would like to thank Mr. Zuill for his life and securing a great family.

His voice will be heard for a long time to come. Also I want to say thank you for many out there, for their vision, courage, loyalty, trust, dedication and sacrifices, hard work and most of all for "being you".

The perfect song, "One moment in time", was picked to be played on Mr. Zuill's special day when leaving us – a song that says a lot about him and one that has a message that we all should pay close attention to.

Yes! That one moment in time, because if we make that one special, many more will follow.

Until next time!
