UDP $10,000 grant to promote anti-violence message

Government has given $10,000 to support a dance company promoting an anti-violence message through a series of productions. Premier Dr. Ewart Brown presented United Dance Productions founder Suzette Harvey with the donation for her troupe's socially conscious summer performances called 'Peace in the Streets'.

"If we are to successfully fight the scourge of violence it needs to be a fully involved community effort," said Premier Brown. "Suzette Harvey has shown community leadership with the 'Peace in the Streets' road show and we did not hesitate to support her financially.

"The Government cannot solve this problem alone. We will need allies in the community like Ms Harvey who are not afraid to lead with whatever talents they have."

Last month "Peace in the Streets" visited Somerset, St. George's and Hamilton in the week leading up to Cup Match.

"There were 25 dancers and about ten local artists from many artistic genres. All performances fell under an anti-violence theme.

"The show was a success," said Ms Harvey. "We are already talking about bringing it back next year. The week before Cup Match seemed to really work well for people."

Most of the performance costs were incurred as a result of building, transporting and rebuilding the stage. Iit is anticipated there will be some funds leftover in the $10,000 donation.

Ms Harvey says leftover money will be used to start a scholarship fund called 'Jumpstart Dance Foundation'.
