Death by dangerous driving case committed to Supreme Court

Sergio Pacheco

The case of a man accused of killing teenage sports star Machai Campbell in a road collision was committed to the Supreme Court by a Magistrate yesterday.

Mr. Campbell, 19, died when his bike collided with another motorcycle on Cavendish Road, close to his home in Pembroke, on December 30 last year.

Sergio Pacheco, aged 32, of Pembroke, was charged last month with causing his death by driving a motorcycle in a dangerous manner.

He has not been required to enter a plea to the charge, since it is one that must be dealt with by the Supreme Court.

Pacheco, a Portuguese national, attended a brief preliminary hearing before Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner yesterday afternoon. After reviewing the case papers, Mr. Warner announced that the case was committed to the Supreme Court.

The defendant is due to appear there during the monthly arraignments session on November 2, when he will be required to enter a plea. He was bailed until then.
