City Hall may get colour change

City Hall: May no longer be white

City Hall could soon get a makeover and a new colour, it emerged at a Corporation of Hamilton meeting yesterday.

As part of its campaign to rebrand the City of Hamilton, the Corporation is considering painting City Hall a new colour.

The Corporation's recently unveiled marketing scheme "Hamilton: Bermuda at its Best" will also incorporate a new signage system to assist visitors with directions around the city.

Glenn Smith, Chairman of the Corporation of Hamilton's Infrastructure Committee, said that a new paint job could highlight the aesthetic beauty of City Hall.

"City Hall has been painted white since it was built," said Mr Smith. "Changing the building's colour could bring out some of its features that are not visible with a white paint scheme. By painting it a different shade some of the subtle features could be more visible. This is a beautiful building and we should highlight that."

Chair of the Corporation's Property Committee, Alderman John Harvey, revealed several computer-generated colour schemes to Corporation members. If the proposal is approved the Corporation plans to go forward with the painting sometime next year.

"There are several suggestions for the potential repainting of City Hall," said Mr. Harvey. "We of course also have the option of leaving the building as it is. The colours chosen are certainly pleasing to the eye and could be an exciting change for the city. The only issue with changing the colour would come with any future patchwork that the building may need – it may not blend well."

The corporation members approved the colour change concept although a colour was not decided upon. Amongst the suggestions were off-whites, yellow and light blue. Mayor Charles Gosling proposed painting small areas of the building with new colours to help decide what would work best or possibly putting it to a public vote.

And in keeping with the theme of rebranding Hamilton new signage will be installed around the city. The signs will be installed in strategic areas to help tourists and visitors find their way around.

The signs will be installed around the City's existing infrastructure said Mr. Smith. "We will install a uniformed system of signage in keeping with the theme 'Hamilton: Bermuda at its Best'," he said. "The signs will tie in with the city's existing infrastructure like lamp posts and street signs. We hope to have them all installed by the middle to end of June."
