Arsenal have to bounce back . . . quickly

Arsene Wenger is going to have to get his players in the right frame of mind before Sunday's big match at Stamford Bridge. The Gunners must have been feeling very low after being thoroughly beaten by Manchester United last weekend at home.

I hate to say it, but it was like watching men against boys. And it is not just Arsenal who have to pick up their spirits – Chelsea will also have to gear themselves up after being held by Hull mid-week. Those are the kind of games Chelsea must win if they are going to be crowned champions this season and the result brought them back to Manchester United. They must have been kicking themselves after coming away with only a point.

All is not lost for Arsenal despite many being pessimistic about the side after last weekend's game.

They can close the gap on Chelsea to three points if they can win on Sunday – something they did last season.

And Arsenal can also look back this season when they were 11 points behind Chelsea in November. They managed to come back after that and they can do so again.

But I have to say that you would have to give Chelsea the nod for this weekend's game. They have a more mature side than Arsenal. But I think it could be a close-run thing – definitely a match to look forward to.

Also Chelsea could see their lead evaporate before their match since Manchester United are playing Portsmouth at Old Trafford on Saturday. Three points will see them take over the top spot and that is likely considering the form the side are in right now. Rooney in particular has been amazing. As I have said here before, the energy he and Tevez have is unbelievable. They are like the Energizer Bunny! They never stop and are all over the place.

But the player who really impressed me last weekend was Nani. In fact his last three matches for United have been excellent. For quite a while everyone was down on him but sometimes it takes a player longer to settle longer than others. Nani has seemingly matured. We all knew he had skill – there was never any doubt about that – but now he is making the right pass and getting into space – he is making the right decisions.

The move he made on Arsenal's defenders by the touchline last weekend was beautiful. However I don't know what the two defenders were doing with both of them standing up square to the Portuguese player. Then he sold a dummy to another Arsenal player before floating the ball over for Park that Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia had to go for. In the end he touched it into his own net. But there really was not much else he could do. I heard the commentator on Fox critisising Almunia but that keeper played well. There was nothing he could do and he certainly has managed to get Arsenal out of trouble a number of times this season. That Fox commentator drives me crazy! I think he was also knocking Defoe this week in the FA Cup match against Leeds. And Defoe goes and hits a hat-trick to see Spurs through to the next round. I would have Defoe in my team anytime.

Another good match this weekend will see Spurs host Aston Villa. That is going to be a good match and I give the nod to Spurs if they play they way the know how to.

West Ham travel to Burnley on Saturday and we must get points there. I must say I am happy with us buying South African striker Benni McCarthy, Egypt striker Mido and Brazilian striker Ilan. That can only help us. I have always liked McCarthy even though he didn't seem to fit in with Blackburn and I hope Mido can try and find the form he had when he was at Spurs.

n There has been a great commotion in England this past week about John Terry being involved with an ex-girlfriend of Wayne Bridge. And yesterday England manager Fabio Capello stripped Terry of the England captaincy. Well I see no reason for that. Terry did something wrong and he knows it but it seems today that everyone wants to get involved with everyone else's private business. I can guarantee you that everyone has skeletons in their closet. It seems that Terry's critics want to see him hung at the gallows – he didn't kill anyone! We all make mistakes and stripping him of the captain's armband is not going to help England.

n Finally I was saddened to see that the Confederation of African Football have banned Togo from the next two Nations Cups after that country withdrew from the just completed tournament because of a terrorist attack on their bus.

Some common sense is needed here.

It is not like Togo withdrew for some silly reason – they had people killed during that attack. Those players are probably still affected by it and will be for some time to come.

I hope sanity eventually prevails.
