An honour I'll remember for the rest of my life

I'd like to begin by saying what an honour it is to have the new Bermuda Football Association Centre of Excellence named after me.

It's something that I'll remember for the rest of my life. It's fantastic to have something of that magnitude named after you because, in life, everybody wants to leave a legacy, and what better way to be able to leave one than to have a building named after you.

It's going to be there for your life, your children's lives, your grandchildren's lives, and so on.

In truth, we need more places like the centre of excellence as it's important that our kids have good pitches to play on. Ideally you'd like to see pitches like the one at BFA Field in the West and East End as well.

We did get a lot of money, football and cricket, from Government, and I just think we should have put more into the infrastructure, it probably would have been a lot better use of the money. When I look at a lot of our clubs, they have been in a poor state since I was a little kid and we need to make sure these places are in better condition.

Hopefully the new BFA president and his executive will continue with the process of improving the Island's infrastructure. There have been times when we haven't all worked together, but as I've always said to people, teams win championships, it's not 'I got this, I got that', that sort of stuff. We need everyone working together for the same cause and football has to be the winner, none of us individually.

My main concern with football in Bermuda right now is that we have to have a good infrastructure, we must start developing from the bottom and I think at times we have focused too much on building from the top down, rather than the bottom up. If you look anywhere in the world, the successful teams invest in their infrastructure. If we want to compete, and play, with the best teams in the world, we have to have a good infrastructure, otherwise it doesn't work.

If you go to Holland and see what they have done, it's been like that for the last 30 or 40 years. I was there 30 years ago and it has continued today, and we have to do the same thing, we have to.

Last weekend was a strange one in the Premiership, Chelsea lost, Arsenal lost, West Ham won. It just goes to show what I have always said, anyone can beat anyone in England on any given day if they put their mind to it. It shows the competitveness of the game in England.

Chelsea and Arsenal, of course, play each other tomorrow and the game is doubly important for Arsenal because any team that wants to win the league has to get a result at Stamford Bridge.

It will be a very interesting game. At the present time Arsenal are playing the beautiful game, and everybody wants to see a team like Arsenal win the leage because they are playing the game the right way. I just wish a lot more teams could play like that.

My boys had a wonderful result last time out and what I was impressed with was the work rate that they showed against Tottenham. We've always known that we can play football, we can play with the best, but at times our effort seems to have been lacking.

They've proved that they can work with the best teams and that is something they must continue to do against Fulham today.
