Proud family watch as Marc Bean is sworn in as Senator

Marc Bean received a kiss from his sister Linda Talbot and his Aunt Jewell Woods after being sworn in as a Senator and Junior Minister of Tourism and Transportation yesterday morning at Government House.

Governor Sir Richard Gozney commended the Government yesterday for elevating 34-year-old Marc Bean to Senator.

He said: "I think it's impressive that the Premier and the Government have elevated a young man that has been closely involved with youth affairs and who is very keen to represent the younger generation of Bermuda.

"In any society different generations look to have their own advocates in public life from within their own age groups.

"I wish him every success in representing the younger generation both as a Senator and as a Junior Minister in the Government."

Sen. Bean was officially sworn in at Government House yesterday morning in front of Deputy Premier Paula Cox and close family.

He is replacing Wayne Caines, who resigned to pursue a career in the private sector, and will be taking over responsibilities as Junior Minister of Tourism and Transport as well as Junior Minister of the Environment and Sport.

After the ceremony, Sen. Bean told The Royal Gazette: "I made a promise when I first entered into politics, I made a promise to the people that I was entering for this generation to ensure that equality and justice finally gets ushered into Bermuda in a real sense and Bermuda becomes a nation of peace and prosperity."

His proud father Allan Bean said: "I support him in everything he does and he's progressing quite well.

"He's been involved the way that he is and he has his whole heart in it, so I'm pleased."

His aunt Jewell Woods remembered Marc's childhood aspiration to be the Premier of Bermuda and admitted she knew this day would come.

She said: "I wouldn't say it was a surprise, I knew that this day would come for him because he has such a pure heart for the people.

"And I know he is going to be loved by the people and that will make him a success. I'm ecstatic. I'm very proud of him and I know he's going to do his best for the country."

Sen. Bean's mother, Corallyn Bean, died 18 years ago when he was only a teenager, but his aunt stressed that she would have been very proud of his accomplishments.
