Argus' Walk the Walk 5K raises $10,000
More than $10,000 was raised for scores of charities during the first Argus Walk the Walk Charity 5K.
The walk was held on Sunday, February 28, and more than 530 people registered to take part with each participant paying a $25 entry fee, with $20 from each entry being donated to the charity selected by the participant.
The remaining $5 of each entry fee was given to support The Centre on Philanthropy's website, www.volunteer.bm, Bermuda's only volunteer recruitment website.
Altogether 64 charities benefited, but those with the most support were Open Airways, a charity providing education and support for sufferers of asthma and other respiratory problems, Bermuda Institute, the Seventh-day Adventist school located in Southampton; The Sunshine League, a residential care facility for displaced youth, P.A.L.S., a cancer care charity, and the Bermuda Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
Jennifer Burland Adams, The Centre on Philanthropy's development and engagement manager, said: "We are delighted with the success of the first ever Argus Walk the Walk. The large number of registrations means that many charities of various sizes will benefit from a single event.
"We are particularly pleased to have been able to help the community to give to several small charities that don't have the resources to hold their own charity walk.
"We are grateful to the Argus Group for its support in helping us to launch this initiative and to everyone who participated on Sunday despite the unpleasant weather conditions."
Gerald Simons, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Argus Group, said: "Argus is committed to improving the well-being of Bermuda's residents.
"The walk enabled Argus to support several charities which add so much to Bermuda's quality of life and to encourage people to get some exercise at the same time. We were delighted to partner with The Centre on Philanthropy for this initiative."
