Fort St. Catherine is suffering from structural problems after years of erosion at its base and a recent battering from Hurricane Gert has now made the situation worse.

Curator of Forts Lance Furbert is hoping Works and Engineering staff will be able to tackle the scheme in the coming weeks and protect the ancient structure from further deterioration.

"The bedrock under the fort has been washed away, we have to underpin in some way,'' said Mr. Furbert. "Hurricane Gert made it considerably worse.'' A long crack is visible down one side of the fort, going down to the battered foundations.

Engineers have surveyed the damage and are confident it can be remedied. The location of the East End fort, on the sea shore, will make the work more difficult, said Mr. Furbert.
