Officers made 53 arrests for impaired driving between January and March this year, compared with 64 for the same period last year.

Just 29 people failed breath tests at the station, a drop of seven from the 1997 figures.

Police also dealt with 17 motorists who refused to take give breath samples, compared with 19 for the same period last year.

And seven suspects actually passed the breath tests, compared with nine for the first three months of 1997.

Records also show that only four women were arrested on suspicion of drink driving, while 49 men were taken into custody.

A Police spokeswoman said: "Most people were arrested between 1 and 3 a.m., when there were 19 arrests.

"Fifteen people were arrested between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. and 11 were arrested between 5 and 10 p.m.

"Six people were arrested between 3 and 5 a.m., while two people were arrested at other times.'' Figures revealed that most arrests were made on Saturdays -- with 20 -- while nine people were arrested on Fridays and eight on Thursdays.

Only three people under the age of 21 were taken in for breath tests but Police arrested 15 people in their 30s, 14 in their 20s and 14 in their 40s.

They also stopped 30 bikes, 19 cars, two trucks or vans and two taxis.

Six people have died on Bermuda's roads already this year -- and the Road Safety Council is now planning a fresh safe driving campaign.
