If you own a valuable Persian or Oriental example, and wish to clean it yourself, this is the correct method:
Begin by "dividing'' carpet into four sections. Follow all steps for each section before moving on to another, and complete all sections in one day.
First, vacuum very vigorously from the back. Start with a clean bag and check and empty the bag frequently, continuing to vacuum until no more dirt is found in the bag. Then, turn the example over and vacuum the front, following same procedure. Turn example over again, and repeat process on back. It is very important to follow all steps as prescribed before applying suds or water because a mixture of dirt and water can ruin the carpet.
Next, mix Sunlight soap and water together vigorously enough to create thick suds. With a sponge, rub suds in direction of pile, taking care to use more suds than water. Do not soak the example. With a separate sponge half wrung out in lukewarm water, remove suds. Place example outside, face up, in sunlight to dry. Alternatively, dry with a hair dryer.
Note: Never leave carpet damp for more than 48 hours.
