Green Island set to leave

is set to leave this week. The Green Island is expected to sail from Dockyard over the weekend, following weeks of essential work to a 90-foot by 30-foot opening in its side. The piece of hull plating fell off whilst the 34,000 tonne vessel was at sea, sailing from Singapore to the United States. Shipping Officials said its double-bottom construction and bulkheads saved it from sinking. Engineers from the United States were flown in to help with the repairs, carried out in conjunction with Meyer Industries. It has been moored at Dockyard whilst new hull plates were welded into place. A second vessel, the Green Island , owned by the same company, took the freight from the ship, which was expected to depart for America for more permanent repairs.

Meanwhile, Meyer report the expected arrival tomorrow of the Bermuda Islander . It will be bringing 131 containers including 24 refrigerated. The Somers Isle is due on Sunday with a mixed cargo of freight and last Sunday the Pioneer Leader , brought in 159 cars. Container Ship Management made history this weekend, when the Oleander set a record for its crossing from the US to Bermuda. The vessel, with captain Jan Van de Westeringh at the helm, completed the crossing from Port Elizabeth, New Jersey in a record 38 and three quarter hours. Travelling at an average speed of 17.18 knots, it was made possible by favourable wind and sea conditions. The crossing was the fastest since the Oleander came into service in 1990. It brought in 133 dry containers, 40 refrigerated, 12 trailers, 22 cars, a boat, dump truck and a digger truck.
