Town, Blazers get more time
and Dandy Town gives both teams extra time to prepare for what will be a tough rematch -- though they'll probably have to do without their overseas players Kevin Smith and Devarr Boyles.
Boulevard captain Albert Smith confirmed that his brother Kevin, a former Town player, isn't likely to be here for the semi final replay because of work commitments in Cleveland where he now resides.
Town's midfielder Devarr Boyles, a student at Old Dominion University, is doubtful because of studies and a hamstring injury which he ironically suffered when Town knocked Boulevard out of the Friendship Trophy last month.
Boyles scored the first goal in that match before limping off at half time.
Even without the pair, though, these two teams are capable of not only reaching the final but winning the trophy for a second time.
Smith has been back twice to help out Boulevard this season in the FA Cup, but both he and Boyles departed for the United States on Monday and would have missed the replay anyway.
"He said he didn't know if he would make it back for the replay but if we make the final he will definitely be back,'' Albert stated last night.
Town coach Mark Trott wasn't sure last night if Town would be bringing Boyles back for the replay.
"I'll give him a call and find out how he's feeling and go from there,'' said Trott last night.
"I'm feeling good about the team because George (Dyer) is back and that gives us another quality midfielder along with Gladwin Johnson.
"His (Boyles) physio at school will check him and assess the injury. I'll talk to his physio and find out the extent of the injury.'' Town face Dandy Town in the Friendship Trophy replay tomorrow night at Somerset and on Sunday take on St. George's in the league. Like Boulevard, they are in the hunt for trophies at the end of the season, both with an excellent change of the league and FA Cup double.
"We'll see how it goes on Thursday night and then on Sunday and it may not be necessary (to bring back Boyles),'' Trott explained.
No new replay date has been set by the Bermuda Football Association, but after Sunday's draining extra contest at Bernard Park which failed to produce a goal, Albert Smith welcomes having more time to prepare.
"In a way it's a little help for us as we are still feeling achy from Sunday,'' he admitted. "It gives us some time to regroup.'' Despite a bad start to the season Boulevard have gone from strength to strength since the return of Smith, Leroy Stevens and Neil Robinson from World Cup duty and Wayne Richardson from injury and suspension.
They have climbed to joint first in the standings and, despite a hiccup in the Friendship Trophy where they lost to Town last month, Town are in the hunt for two of the last three major trophies up for grabs.
"We're looking to get both the league and FA,'' Smith says of the team's aspirations. "When we went away with the (national) squad we had players who didn't show the commitment but now we can set goals and try to achieve them.'' Boulevard won the double just two years ago and they have a strong chance to repeat that, with the team going through a good run.
With four games left against Somerset, PHC, Hamilton Parish and Devonshire Colts, Smith admits they won't have it easy. Three of those teams are also chasing the league title.
"I think it's going to go down to the wire,'' the midfielder says. "All the games are going to be hard, even the one against Hamilton Parish.'' Tomorrow's Friendship replay will be preceded by a Commercial Division match at 7.00 between St. George's All-Stars and Prison Officers.
KEY MEN -- Dandy Town's Neil Paynter (left) and Paul Cann combine to shut out Boulevard captain Albert Smith during Sunday's match at Bernard Park. All three will play key roles in the replay.
