report on a 20-year-old Pembroke woman who admitted stealing $800 from Crisson jewellers.

Sharita M. Swan, of Ewing Street, pleaded guilty to stealing $235 and $605 from the jewellery store's Front Street branch in October last year.

Swan was working on the cash register on October 20 when a customer came in to pay $235 -- a final instalment on items laid away, prosecutor Insp. Peter Duffy said.

Swan gave the customer the item and the receipt, but kept copies of the receipt for herself.

On October 30 another customer went to the store to pay $605 -- the final instalment on a layaway.

Swan did the same as with the previous customer, Insp. Duffy said.

In both cases she failed to make proper entries in the store's computer system, he said.

The manager of the store noticed the items were missing, but there were no receipts of final payments for them. He contacted the customers who both produced receipts of their payments.

Swan told Police on November 6 she stole the money due to financial problems.

Police found a copy of one of the receipts in her handbag.

Swan, who has one child, made full restitution to Crisson and apologised for the offences.
