It was a tonic for the Bermudian as he steps up his Sydney Olympics campaign.

He only went over 17 metres once in a difficult 12 months for him last year.

Wellman's best jump indoors or outdoors -- 17.72 metres -- won him gold at the World Indoor Championships in Barcelona in 1995. Bermuda's five-time Athlete-of-the-Year helped organise the triple jump event at the Tyson Invitational, which was staged close to where he is based.

The 3,000 metres at the same meet was won by Canada's Courtney Babcock, winner in successive years of the Bank of Butterfield women's 10K. Babcock, who won in a time of 9:08.05, also competed in the mile where she finished third.
