Ten-man Wolves oust Red Devils

Showing all the fighting spirit that their monicker suggests, Wolves booked a spot in the Martonmere Cup final, upsetting high riding North Village at Devonshire Rec., last night.

Despite playing two-thirds of the match short-handed following the first half sending off of a mysteriously agitated Chae Simmons, Wolves earned the right to contest their second straight final of the competition -- they were losing finalists in 1999 -- on the strength of a strike by substitute Nathan Webb three minutes from time.

And while not cosmetically pretty in appearance, the result stood beautiful in the eyes of coach Dennis Brown and his charges.

"They (Village) were the favourites and one thing I told the team was that if they wanted to get recognition they had to get out there and do the job,'' said a jubilant Brown immediately afterwards. "They had to dig deep, pull together and find a way to get through ... take the chance when it came.'' Indeed there posing as the man in the mirror at crunch time was Webb, who justified the faith placed in him by his coach in scoring -- and flooring -- a hitherto untouchable Red Devil outfit.

Webb, injected after 55 minutes for an out-of-touch Jared Peniston, came good as a quick counter by Wolves saw the ball chipped over the defence into the path of the striker, who rode a challenge by his marker before using the outside of his boot to flip the ball past a helpless Zane Hendrickson.

Prior to Webb's heroics a sizeable crowd was left in bewilderment as to whether a game would actually break out, with the high pace and tempo exhibited by both sides belying the actual content.

Outside of a 25-yard blast from Shaki Crockwell of Village in the second minute that forced a full-length save from Wolves' Corbin Durrant there was nothing in the form of clear-cut chances for either side.

As for the impending final against Devonshire Colts, coach Brown was cautiously optimistic, saying: "I'm not going to say that we will win it.

We'll put our best foot forward and go from there.'' Wolves: C.Durrant; A.Caisey, C.Smith (S.Waldron 75 mins), D.Sharrieff, J.Warren; A.Thomas, T.davis, C.Simmons; J.Peniston (N.Webb 55 mins), S.Crockwell (A.Outerbridge 55 mins), N.Smith.

The Bermuda Football Association axe dropped on two players involved in a soccer fracas, with lengthy suspensions the order.

Paul Maybury of Somerset and North Village's Vernon Tankard received respective six- and eight-game suspensions for their roles in a brief off-the-ball fighting frenzy that ended with Tankard unconscious.

Tankard received his suspension for instigating the fight in throwing a karate kick at the Somerset player during a Martonmere contest at BAA Field.

Meanwhile, Maybury's ban was due to his retaliation in the form of a punch that knocked out Tankard.
