when he won Sunday's Laser series off Spanish Point in convincing fashion.

Smith dominated the day's proceedings, snatching five of the six races while placing second to Craig Davis in the other.

Second overall was Christian Luthi, who managed to control a number of wild rolls on the downwind legs and remain upright. With Smith untouchable, Luthi waged a close battle with Bill Pollett throughout to earn second place overall.

Despite a forecast of 20-30 knot winds with an approaching cold front, Bermuda Offshore Cruising Association's fleet had a good turnout of 15 boats for the `Danish Day' race on Sunday, which saw Crew Cut , High Energy , Thistledew and Dillightful winning the respective classes on corrected time.

While conditions weren't as bad as expected, the winds were extremely gusty from the north, north-west in the region of 15-20 knots with gusts to 25. The race committee set a 20 nautical mile course in the Great Sound consisting of several legs of Dundonald Channel.

In the racing class there was an interesting battle at the front with the first three boats finishing within 25 seconds of each other. Francis Carter's Circle , which was being sailed by Buddy Rego, led the way home and was followed 18 seconds later by Derek Ratteray's Taxi , with Peter Bromby on the helm, who narrowly squeezed out High Energy (Penny Simmons).

Crew Cut managed to stay in touch with the leaders and won class one on corrected time while High Energy was the winner in class two.

Class three was poorly represented with only two boats starting. Bobby Oatley in Thistledew beat Reckless (Greg Vasic) by a minute on corrected time.

In the cruising class, Nicky Dill on board Dillightful was a convincing winner with Scheherezade (Leslie Swainson) in second place and Temptation (Claude Guay) in third.

Free Falling (Ed Faries) was forced to retire with rigging problems when one of her shrouds parted.

The next BOCA event will be the second Fall Series race on Sunday, November 19.

Bermuda Board Sailing Association's latest series of races were dominated by Neil Burnie, who captured top honours in all four races.

Racing off Spanish Point, Burnie relished the upwind work during the early races but the wind became less consistent as the day wore on, making it impossible to hold the slalom segment of the series.

Racing is expected to take place each Sunday at noon until the end of the winter. Further information is available on the Old Cellar's bulletin board or by calling 299-9507.

Alexander Lines seized sole possession of first place in the Fall Optimist Open Regatta after sailing to four wins in six races on Sunday in Hamilton Harbour.

Lines surged ahead of previous co-leader Alexandra Crane, who was shut out of the win column for the first time in the series, with the other two race triumphs going to Alexander Kirkland.
