Bermuda skittled out for 47: Another batting collapse gives Windwards victory

Bermuda were shot out for 47 yesterday as the Red Stripe Bowl game they were most confident of winning turned into a disaster.

The Windward Islands, like Bermuda without a win in the Zone A competition before yesterday, were seen as the most likely avenue for two points.

But after amassing 209 all out in all but two balls of their allotted 50 overs all four of the Windward bowlers got among the wickets as Bermuda slumped with barely a whimper.

Only two players managed double figures this time, Dexter Smith, who looked in his best of form of the tour, hitting 14 before being bowled around his legs by Roy Marshall, and Richard Basden who ran himself out in bizarre fashion for 10.

Charlie Marshall's men had suffered a horrendous collapse in the middle order against Guyana the previous day, losing three wickets in one over. Yesterday they surpassed themselves, losing three wickets in three balls to plummet from 26 for two to 26 for five.

Smith, who had collected a couple of top-class boundaries backward of square on the off-side, off pacemen Nixon McLean and McNeil Morgan, misjudged the final ball of Marshall's first over to lose his leg stump.

Then Charlie Marshall perished with the first ball of Morgan's following over, top-edging to be caught on the third man boundary. The next ball Morgan trapped Aaron Adams leg before for a golden duck.

Adams has lasted just three balls in his two matches but the Cleveland batsman can think himself a little unlucky as Morgan had to almost plead with the umpire to give the decision.

When Richard Basden, who had batted soundly amid the surrounding chaos, inexplicably tried to take a single to short mid-wicket and was run out, it was simply a matter of time before the Bermuda innings was put out of its misery.

Clarkie Trott, who has undoubted talent with the bat but seems to want to smear almost every ball into the furthest stand, was bowled for two, playing back to Marshall.

Kwame Tucker picked out deep square leg with a pull of Raul Lewis, Herbie Bascome was excellently held trying to clear mid-off and Peter Philpott lost his off stump to tie things up by the middle of the 28th over.

Earlier Bermuda had bowled and fielded impressively, Bascome and Trott showing accuracy once again with the new ball. But it was Dennis Archer who made the breakthrough having Dawnley Joseph snapped up low at backward point by Philpott.

Left-arm spinners Hasan Durham and Philpott then tied up Junior Murray long enough for the batsman's frustration to result in a catch to mid wicket.

Durham also accounted for Tibbles Moore and Batley Watt, the latter excellently caught over his own shoulder by the bowler.

Basden had Roy Marshall brilliantly caught by namesake Charlie who ran from extra cover to a deepish mid-off position to leave the Windwards on 127 for five.

It should have been 127 for six but Bascome spilled a sharp offering from Lewis at mid wicket when the Windwards skipper had just 26.

Lewis went on to hit 67 from 70 balls, including two glorious sixes, one over mid wicket and the other flat over long-off.

He was the last man out, again well caught, this time by Trott to give Basden the fine figures of five for 35 from 9.4 overs.

Lewis went on to claim three wickets late in the Bermuda innings to win the man of the match award.

Durham also finished with impressive figures for Bermuda, his three for 37 in 10 overs giving him five wickets from the two occasions he has bowled in the tournament.

The team will return home this evening on the American Airlines flight out of New York.
